01 / Why this, here

Oceanside is finally a retail town. The platform tax shouldn't follow.

Downtown Oceanside has changed in a five-year window most of the county is still catching up to. The Pier district has a denser independent-retail mix than it has had in decades. South Oceanside surf shops outsell their Carlsbad counterparts more often than people admit. The craft beverage scene (beer, kombucha, hard tea, cold-brew coffee) runs on small operators canning out of tight spaces near Mission Park and shipping to followers they earned on social, not on Amazon.

These operators are exactly the wrong shape for Shopify. The catalog is small. The brand is the asset. The customer found them because of a personality, not a SKU search. And Shopify charges a monthly platform fee to be the same as everybody else, on top of a payment processor's cut.

Stripe-direct removes the platform layer. Stripe handles money (PCI compliance, fraud screens, payment methods) out of sight, where it belongs. We build everything in front of it: storefront, product pages, cart, checkout, and the receipt email that follows. The customer never leaves your domain. The brand carries from product photo to confirmation email without a hand-off to somebody else's screen.

02 / What we build

Front to back, written to the shop.

03 / What this looks like

Three Oceanside shops, three flavors of the same build.

A South Oceanside surf retailer with a house apparel line. A shop that carries five hardgoods brands and prints its own tees, hats, and a small twice-yearly capsule. Twenty SKUs across the apparel line plus a curated set of fins, wax, and leash bundles for the locals. The product page is a photograph and a paragraph, no fake reviews, no upsell carousel. Local pickup at the Pier district shop is one of the shipping options. Most apparel orders ship to followers from out of state who visited once and got hooked.

A craft beverage label canning near Mission Park. A small brewery: eight current cans, a few merch pieces, and a monthly subscription that ships a four-pack to whatever beer the brewer thinks is peaking. Stripe Tax handles alcohol-shipping complexity that Shopify apps would otherwise charge for monthly. Inventory pulls from a tiny back-office sheet. When a beer is done, the can disappears from the shop the same minute. The subscription is the actual business model. Stripe handles it as a first-class object.

A Downtown Oceanside concept shop selling its own goods. A coffee bar that prints its own merch and sells the beans it roasts. Six SKUs: three bean origins, a logo'd mug, a tee, and a gift box. Subscriptions on the beans. The product page reads like the shop's chalkboard. The checkout looks like the receipt the barista hands you. Out-of-state customers, mostly former Fire Mountain residents who moved away and miss the shop.

04 / Honest scope

What we will and will not take on.

This is the right call when the catalog stays small, the brand is the whole point, and the operator wants the source code to live in their account. It is the wrong call when the catalog runs into the thousands of variants, when a marketplace with seller logins is needed, or when half the value comes from a stack of Shopify apps. For those, Shopify Plus is the honest recommendation and we will tell you so before any contract.

North County SD: in-person reachable inside an hour. Studio HQ is in San Diego, which puts a kickoff in the Pier district or San Luis Rey firmly inside a workday. The rest of the build is remote. Final delivery lands on your domain, with your Stripe keys, in a Git repository you own. One person on the work. That is the price and the speed.

This page was drafted from a structured outline and hand-reviewed before launch. The work itself is custom, owner-operated, never templated.
